A consultant and print technologist who feels a citizen of the world is inspired by the values of hard work and service that unite our global industry

Sean Smyth, print technologist and analyst at Smithers, feels fortunate to be part of an industry that serves every individual in the world. He highlights the role of Ukraine and the bravery of its printers, offering them his help.

I’m a print technologist based in the UK. I consider myself European and a citizen of the world, and extremely fortunate to be in the community of printing and packaging providers. Because the print and packaging community is wide ranging, from tree farmers to the leading brands and retailers who touch every individual across the world.

We are a complex and interconnected group of producers, converters, and consumers — one of the largest and most important industry sectors in the world. There are print providers in every country in the world, and we all share common issues: how to craft and produce the finest quality output, using whatever methods of production that are available, even as we compete with each other.

The current situation we find ourselves in is appalling. War should not be on the playbook of civilized nations, unless it against an uncivilized opponent, such as racism or ignorance, or the COVID virus we have been fighting together for the past few years.

It seems that the acts of many politicians are far removed from the desires of individuals, who simply want to continue to support their families, their friends, and their fellow human beings. It seems the acts of many politicians are far removed from business leaders who wish to create viable businesses to support their employees, their customers, and the people who use print, which is everyone in the world, whatever their race, beliefs or background.

Ukraine is a producer of many materials used across printing supply chains. We need you! I read of the bravery and commitment of the print community in Ukraine, and I am humbled. You make me feel inadequate beside your achievements, and I want to help you. So, like all, I pledge help and support to rebuild the print community of Ukraine when this war ends, as all wars do.

I stand with Ukraine! I stand with Ukrainian printers!
